Unaspected planets
Dec. 5th, 2024 10:51 amWhat happens if a planet is not aspected in your natal chart? An unaspected planet lacks any major aspect (conjunction, opposition, trine, square, sextile), so it doesn’t easily connect with other planets. This often leads to unique development, sometimes making the unaspected planet powerful enough to dominate your personality.
The Meaning of Unaspected Planets
Like the “New Kid” at School
Planets in your horoscope represent various forces in your life, often personified as people who influence you—such as the Moon representing the mother, Saturn representing the father or other authority figures, and so on. A planet having no aspect with others seems to stand alone in a group, like the “new kid” at school.
What does the new kid need to do to survive? She needs to form connections. But because she doesn’t know anyone yet, there’s an awkwardness and a sense of not fitting in. Still, she must press on. The way she goes about this is reflected by the nature of the unaspected planet. For example, an unaspected Mercury might become overly chatty to break the ice, Venus could become extra people-pleasing, and Mars might act boisterous or overly assertive.
Noel Tyl taught me that unaspected planets tend to express themselves in an exaggerated way to draw attention. It’s as though the new kid feels the need to make an impression, or risk being ignored and isolated in her new environment. However, as anyone who’s been through high school knows, the impression you make can be either positive or negative, depending on how you approach it.
Unique and Powerful Development
Planets form aspects to provide both support and challenge to one another. In real life, this reflects how we form relationships with parents, teachers, and friends, who encourage and challenge us to grow.
Unaspected planets, however, don’t connect as easily with others, at least not initially. This means there may be less support, but also fewer restrictions, allowing the planet’s energy to develop and express itself more freely. As a result, unaspected planets can become a highly unique and powerful part of the personality.
When interpreting the behavior of unaspected planets, think of their expression as either impressively unique and strong or unrestrained and excessive. We’ll explore both possibilities in more depth as we look at each planet’s interpretation.
