With age, we gain greater inner authority; this speaks to us of the eternal aristocracy of self

In order to have a coat of arms, a family has to have impressive ancestry – and through this they assert authority and claim the prerogative of special importance. Right is being dramatised as a privilege worthy of sustainment, and is demonstrably sustained in this emblem of high aristocracy.

So often, unfortunately, the position is abused for the subtle manipulation of the unwary or the disempowered. We see examples in history, and even today, wherever the power-possessors keep the people down by making claims of self-importance.

And yet, for all its dangers and the questionable implication of inherent inequality between people through accident of birth, the establishment of royalty brings great dignity to the experience of life. This dignification process is enacted by and through the customs and laws by which the community conducts its affairs.

The observance of these rules and values has to be enforced by an elite body whose committed function is social stewardship – and, in this example, that falls to those of a particular bloodline. Times and places change, and royalty is perhaps put aside in favour of presidency, yet the principle is eternal – someone needs to accept the burden of responsibility to maintain standards.

The scope of Virgo 22 is "High-level responsibility", and its means of expansion is Aquarius 26, "Measurement and study of how things work". Its preferred path, Cancer 30, "Respect for tradition", leads to its principle challenge, found in Capricorn 4, "Group responsiveness to collective emergency".

You are highly aware that nothing is ever the same, that, as Heraclitis says, one can’t step into the same stream twice. This means that you bring into this reality a sense of utter freshness that is always and instantaneously renewed. How liberating this can be to people! All you need do is share yourself and your insights, and everyone is renewed.

The Chandra Symbol for this degree is “ A woman writing with the tip of her fingernail.” No tool such as a pen or a pencil stands between the self and the writing, meaning what is communicated is direct, as close to the self as possible. This degree is capable of great sincerity, and self expression that is vivid, pointed, and acute. There is a great ability here to make oneself heard, to make one's point. Imagine a knight riding to far off lands displaying a coat of arms that at once identifies who he represents, who he is, where he hails from and what he stands for. The higher ideal here suggests that energy can radiate out from a central point casting light and influence through undiscovered or unknown realms.

Every 22nd degree symbol echoes every 7th degree symbol. In this case, we can glean much from Virgo 7, "A harem", for understanding Virgo 22. The harem degree indicates a major theme of character compromise... or the issue of an uncompromising character. If you sells oneself, prostitutes oneself, for perceived comforts , advantage or privilege, there is a price to pay.

Clearly choices can be made to be uncompromising with regard to higher principles or to higher instincts, just as one could compromise oneself to satisfy lower instincts.

Hunters Protected By Heavy Clothing Are Shooting Wild Ducks. This degree sounds alarming, and it may prove to be challenging on many fronts, but there will be varying degrees of this Symbol taking hold in the world around and within us. I see first and foremost the possible ramifications on the US electoral process. It seems certain, especially with Mercury going retrograde on the day of the elections, that there has be those who are disenfranchised from voting, feeling cast adrift from having any real say in what's going on, feeling victimised or left out for one reason or another. There will also be bullies and those who feel above everything and everyone and they could be getting out the big guns in order to manipulate and control the agenda. We have already seen people waiting in line when they should be voting and then getting on with their lives, people struck off without a vote, people not able to get their ballot in for one reason or another. This is very much the feeling of this degree; those with the big ammunition control the agenda - whether we feel we live in a democracy or not.

I'm hoping that the eclipse is not a harbinger of violence, enemies emerging, difficulty or obstructions to peace and peace of mind, but there are these very difficult aspects to this degree. As I write this, President Obama has just finished his victory speech. I did a Google of the phrase 'lame duck' to see if anyone was already speaking of that in relation to the governance of the US and there it was already, an article talking about the 'lame duck' Congress.

The following is my abridged definition of this degree - Scorpio 22: HUNTERS PROTECTED BY HEAVY CLOTHING ARE SHOOTING WILD DUCKS

This Symbol implies the need for protection of those who are innocent or younger, smaller, or not able to protect themselves. Being an advocate for others, you can shield them from the more harmful elements of society. You may, at times, feel that you are the one that needs to be protected or given shelter or in need of people declaring a ceasefire and amnesty so people can come out into the open and not be afraid to show their true selves. Of course, there is a need for an outlet for aggressive emotions every now and then. Doing so in groups gives this outlet, such as “Shooting Wild Ducks” some sense of acceptability. However, picking on those that are undefended or smaller is really not right, no matter what the terms. Further this degree can reflect the idea of eating meat and the associated feelings that many have around the herding and killing of animals. As a friend of mine recently did, some will come to the realisation that they need to eat meat in order to stay healthy and there may be a need to drop any feelings of guilt around it. [I will include a personal disclaimer here: I am a meat eater, I don't thrive if I don't eat animal protein.]
